Title: Should HCD practitioners be more strategic in their approach towards design?

Abstract:
How can changing or evolving our mindsets as designers can impact more tangible and measurable design outcomes? Measuring and understanding the value of human-centred design in today’s world requires not only empathy but strategy. By approaching each project with the intention to transform processes, ecosystems, mindsets, educate and bring about empowerment through self-sustaining outcomes is key to achieving sustainability in developing sectors. Using elements of the McKinsey business value of design components and aspects of the business balanced scorecard approach we will endeavour to unpack the value of design. The aim of which is to aid HCD professionals in creating a toolkit that allows them to strategically approach clients and projects with the intent of measuring the impact of the design process be it through increased revenue or visible and measurable capacity building within communities.
