Keynote speaker: Will Scott-Kemmis (Thailand)
In a changing world everyone designs: each individual person and each collective subject, from enterprises to institutions, from communities to cities and regions, must define and enhance a life project.
Looking at the current context of the design field (i.e increasingly complex, crowded and fragmented), then how can designers differentiate themselves and grow in this environment? Will Scott pick ups those themes but also introduces some new ideas. It would also enable us to touch on the concepts of futures, strategy and systems, and to gauge interest in those for future sessions.
One of the books that changed Will’s mindset and view on his role as expert designer is the book “Design when everyone designs” written by Ezio Manzini.
About Will Scott-Kemmis:
Will is Australian, but has worked across Asia for over a decade now as as a strategic designer working on just transitions to more equitable futures. This means working through strategic innovation and collaborative design to make change in systems, and bringing the lenses of justice and equity to that work. The vehicles for change are often new ventures, but can also be networks, platforms and movements. Practically, this means designing and managing research, facilitating strategy development, generating and prototyping concepts, and building partnerships for their growth, all in collaboration with partners, users, clients etc. Thus, relationship management is also part of his practice.

Perhaps the best way to answer the question of what is design, we need to start with the why? And I think Nigel Cross answers this one well.
Because often when the question of what design is comes up. The responses are more about how it is done
Back in 1969 This is what Herbert Simon had to say about what design is “Everybody designs who devises a course of action aimed at changing the existing situation to a preferred one”. I love this because it is inclusive and it shows that designing is not only for designers. Yes designers are more skilled at designing strategies, processes, techniques and things. But ultimately everyone designs in their own way. I would love to hear other people thoughts and perhaps your go to authors on design.
